MISSOULA, Mont. — The Outdoor Writers Association of America announces the launch of a new digital flip-book magazine version of its flagship publication, Outdoors Unlimited.

When you visit Outdoors Unlimited Online (www.owaa-oldsite.birchbarkmedia.com/ou), the new OU looks like a magazine. It has the design of a magazine. The pages turn, just like a magazine. And if you choose, you can download it, print it out and turn paper pages to read it as a hardcopy magazine. Aside from the digital magazine, OU Online still boasts dynamic “online exclusives” including videos, slideshow Portfolios by members, and Outdoor Market listings, detailing editorial needs and job listings, will continue to be updated throughout the month.  Breaking news items and calendar items will posted as they are received and the Editor’s Blog will feature tips and advice throughout the month.

In addition to the digital magazine, an expanded quarterly issue will continue to be delivered to members’ postal mailboxes. Starting with the September 2010 issue, the page count will double from 16 to 32 pages.

“We’re hoping the expanded coverage in OU Quarterly, and the redesign of the monthly online publication, will be a compromise that will serve the needs of all our members.  In this age of transition from print to online, we’re looking for ways to embrace both mediums.  I think this compromise is a step in the right direction,” said Robin Giner, OWAA executive director.

Why the change to OU?

After the June 13 membership meeting at the annual OWAA conference in Rochester, Minn., OWAA staff and Board members discussed ways to enhance the delivery of Outdoors Unlimited. Last year, OU was transformed from a two-color hardcopy monthly newsletter to an interactive website, supplemented by a redesigned, full-color hardcopy quarterly edition.

OWAA listened when some members spoke out at the June 2009 membership meeting in Grand Rapids, Mich. They missed the hardcopy OU. The Board revised its budget to allow for a less expensive alternative to the monthly publication. The following September, just six months after OU Online’s launch, a full-color, redesigned Outdoors Unlimited landed in member’s postal mailboxes as a supplement to OU Online. Outdoors Unlimited’s facelift was well-received.

But still, not everyone was satisfied. And so again, OWAA listened.
