As OWAA celebrates its 90th birthday in 2017, we’ve introduced the “Member Spotlight Monday,” a weekly feature that celebrates our present—the gift of our talented current members and their ongoing excellence in outdoor communications. Today, we introduce Jess McGlothlin:
- Where were you born?
Salt Lake City, Utah. And lived there for all of two months before moving to Montana. - Where do you call home now?
Wherever my camera happens to be at the time! I spend a fair amount of time in Bozeman, but wouldn’t call it home. - What’s your nickname?
Fire Girl (or Chica de Fuego, if I’m in that part of the world). Old childhood nickname that’s stuck. I also answer to “that girl with the camera and fly rod.” - What’s your favorite outdoor activity?
Travel. Being outside in a new place. Fly-fishing, hiking, and backpacking would be right up there as well. - What is your profession/connection with outdoors communication?
Freelance photographer and writer. - Why did you choose to become an outdoor communicator?
Telling stories makes me happy. Being outside and exploring new places makes me happy. I’m still figuring out how to connect all the pieces and make it work, but it’s been an interesting ride so far. - What are you most proud of in your career thus far?
Proud? More humbled that I’ve been able to work with some fantastic clients in incredible places. I love being around people who are experts in their subject matter — so much to learn! - What three words would your friends use to describe you?
Driven. Crazy. Caffeinated. - What is the best piece of advice you have received as an outdoor communicator?
Get closer. In context, it applied to photography. I’m finding it applies to life — and writing — as well. - When you head for the Great Outdoors, what is the one thing you do not leave home without?
Some form of camera. And a good knife. - What would you do if you won the lottery?
Invest it, then move to some little island and make images. - Who do you most admire in your life and why?
My mom. She’s had to put up with a lot of unexpected twists and turns in her life, and she always stays positive and keeps her priorities straight. I can only hope to be half so level-headed. - What was the last movie you saw?
Black Hawk Down. - What are your top three favorite books?
The Man From Snowy River, Wildfire, and The Knights of the Range. - Can you juggle?
Plenty of projects, sure. Physically juggle? Not so much. - What is your favorite dessert?
My mom’s chocolate-coffee cake; it’s my brother and I’s birthday cake every year. - If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
The ability to fly quickly from place to place. - Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Honestly? Who knows. Some far-off corner of the world, camera in hand and notebook close by, documenting something. - What is your favorite inspirational quote?
“The price of being a sheep is boredom. The price of being a wolf is loneliness. Choose one or the other with great care.” -Hugh MacLeod - What do you like best about OWAA?
OWAA has provided a fantastic opportunity to network with like-minded people! It seems everyone involved with the organization has a fantastic story to tell.
Thank you, Jess, for not only your answers to our questions, but also for being valued part of “The Voice of the Outdoors.”
