2016 Bodie McDowell Scholarship recipients announced

MISSOULA, Montana – The Outdoor Writers Association of America awarded three scholarships for the 2016-17 school year to undergraduate and graduate students studying for a career in outdoor communications. Congratulations to our 2016 Bodie McDowell Scholarship winners!

Mark Kaufman, who is pursuing a master’s degree in science journalism at New York University received $1,700. Emily Cook, a master’s degree student in environmental studies with a focus on environmental communication at Prescott College received $1,500.

John David Santi II, a junior studying integrated marketing and communications at the University of Mississippi received $1,500.

OWAA’s Education Committee, chaired by Jack Ballard, reviewed scholarship applications, scored them based upon pre-determined criteria and selected the winners. Headquarters staff solicited applications through emails sent to deans and department chairs of journalism and English and other relevant college departments. Thanks to the following members for judging this year’s applications: Tim Christie, Matthew Dickerson and Tim Mead.

Recipients are paid at the commencement of the fall semester, and also receive a one-year student membership in Outdoor Writers Association of America. OWAA’s Endowment Trustees manage the Bodie McDowell Scholarship Fund and distribute funds to college scholarship recipients each year in accordance with OWAA bylaws.
