2015 Bodie McDowell Scholarship recipients announced

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Outdoor Writers Association of America awarded six scholarships for the 2015-16 school year to undergraduate and graduate students studying for a career in outdoor communications. Congratulations to our 2015 Bodie McDowell Scholarship winners!

Successful graduate applicants are Samuel Hudson, pursuing a master’s of business administration at the University of Central Florida; Charles Ebbers, a master’s candidate in the environmental science and natural resource journalism program at the University of Montana – Missoula; and Thomas Hallberg, who will be attending Oregon State University – Cascades for a master’s of fine arts degree in creative writing. The graduate scholarships were awarded in the amounts of $5,125, $4,125 and $3,125 respectively.

Undergraduate students receiving scholarships are current OWAA student member Tyler Dungannon, who will be a junior at Eastern Oregon University studying biology and communications; Bridget Hawkins, who will be a senior at Western Virginia University completing a double major in recreation, parks and tourism resources and strategic communications; and John Rosa Jr., who will be a senior at Syracuse University studying magazine journalism. Recipients will receive scholarships in the amounts of $5,125, $4,125 and $3,125 respectively.

OWAA’s Education Committee, chaired by Jason Jenkins, reviewed scholarship applications, scored them based upon pre-determined criteria and selected the winners. Headquarters staff solicited applications through emails sent to deans and department chairs of journalism and English and other relevant college departments. Recipients are paid at the commencement of the fall semester, and also receive a one-year student membership in Outdoor Writers Association of America. OWAA’s Endowment Trustees manage the Bodie McDowell Scholarship Fund and distribute funds to college scholarship recipients each year in accordance with OWAA bylaws.
